This is an interesting thread. wanting to get a good printer myself for
printing 7x5s of my slides I just calculated a rough cost from the epson.

looking at the review:
(http://www.photo-i.co.uk/Reviews/interactive/Epson%20R800/page_9.htm) 2
inks are half used so thats an ink cost of about 10 pounds (based on 10
pounds per cart)
the gloss is 1/2 used - say 3 pounds
the the yellow and black are 1.4 used say 5 pounds
total ink = 18 pounds

total in coverage
A4 page is 8.27" by 11.69" = ~ 96" square 12 pages printed = 1152" square
5 x 4 = 20" square 10 printed = 200" square
6 x 4 = 24" square 30 printed = 720" square
total = 2072" square

if all the printing was on A4 paper then 2071 / 96 = 21.5 pages would be
printed

so WITHOUT paper costs the ink used cost around 18 pounds for 21.5 pages
this is 84 pence per page.

paper seems to be around 11 pounds for 20 sheets so thats another 55 pence
per page so the running costs are around 1 pound 39 pence per A4 sheet.

If I print 7x5 I should be able to print 2 photos per A4 page

that gives me a cost of around 70 pence per 7x5
so a roll of 36 would cost 25 pounds to print!
THAT assumes two 7x5 on each page printing only one would double the paper
costs!

Unless I have made a mestake in the maths or the "numerous test strips"
and 8 text documents have considerable surface area say 5 times the
*total* above then this printer with epson paper and epson inks is very
expensive to run! I would not pay 25 pounds for 36 7x5 prints plus and
inital start up cost of 200 pounds for the printer!

Regards
James
