I'm afraid I have no idea what was going on between me and the XA.  I 
checked the rewind knob and the film advance without film and found them 
both to be free and smooth.  I loaded another roll of test film and this 
time did not do anything gingerly but instead wound on normally if not 
vigorously.  Absolutely no problem.

I can only assume, as others suggested, that somehow the film was stuck 
or askew in the cassette and worked normally once I broke it free. 
However, the film was Portra 160 which I have shot plenty of without 
ever a problem.

Who knows.  Seems fine now.
