Standard industry practice? Are we bagging Olympus for producing a
dedicated bayonet instead of a universal mount? They even modified the
M42 mount so that it was unuseable elsewhere. OEM companies almost
always protect themselves in this way, don't they? (yes, I know that
there are exceptions) and then claim that it's so that people don't use
substandard peripherals, or accesssories, or parts, or inks. There is
an element of truth in this justification, as well as considerable
self-interest, as many people have managed to clog their inkjets with
cheap and nasty inks, for instance.

Not quite what I meant. I don't think the OM mount fits the analogy
well at all (or the E-system mount for that matter). Sure, OEM
manufacturers protect themselves this way - but many other people make
lenses for the OM mount. And if you, the consumer, wish to go for the
original Olympus lens rather than some 3rd party variety - then Olympus
did not ridiculously and greedily over-inflate the price to you, the
consumer. Yes, they were / are more expensive - but not usually 10
times more - and the quality difference is (often) noticeable. At
least, the quality difference is more noteable than in the Sony example
I gave of changing the pin configuration of a connector !

As for VHS vs BetaMax, I am just a little too young to remember it all
first hand. We didn't get a VCR until the late 80's / early 90's.
However, I believe you are right about VHS driving BetaMax out through
the hire industry. Sony seemed to have rested on the laurels of a
quality product with BetaMax, only to be caught napping by the inferior
quality VHS with the far superior marketing plan. And if legend is to
believed, the "adult" film industry had some bearing on it too, as they
favoured the VHS system (I guess 'cos they could produce/duplicate their
product more cheaply ?). Anyone from that sector care to comment .....
?!!! ;-)
