Barry asked:
Can anyone direct me to a good primer on digital photo printers? I'd
like to be able to run photo-quality prints up to 11X14 or so from my
office, and need recs on labs to do work in the 20X30 range.

As did Moose, I'd recommend the R1800. I've never used one but have
plenty of experience with the predecessor 2200 which also does very nice
B&W even without special B&W inks.

As to lab work for large prints I can heartily recommend
<http://www.millerslab.com/> In general, however, Miller's only wants
pros who are going to give them a minumum $2000/year. You have to
establish an account with them to do business.

They have recently started a subsidiary consumer side of the business at
<http://www.mpix.com/> I sent some digital B&W to them as a trial and
it came back much too contrasty. I had them retry twice more until they
got disgusted with me and threw up their hands. On the other hand I
just had them do 4 rolls of mixed color film and send 4x6 prints and a
CD of the scans and that work was very nice. They tell me that the
printers and daily profiling of the machines are the same as parent
company Millers. If you want to send film as well as digital you can
order mailers. However, software people they are not. Their digital
image review process for ordering prints from scanned film is totally
the pits. The tell me they are working on it. Anyhow the CD scans are
1200x1800 and the prints are nice. The easiest thing to do is simply
have everything put onto the CD and mailed. Review the CD at home and
then go back on line to do the ordering of prints.
