apologise ahead of time for the off topic, but this has been bothering me
for a while, and the oly list is very rich in knowledge, so here goes:

is it possible to see if an audio file (here, an mp3) is going into
clipping--for whatever reason, be it that it was recorded that way, or the
person ripping it was trying to max out the volume/normalize or some such.
the song is question is from a anime soundtrack, not sold in US (or even
EU).

its been encoded at 320kbps mp3, and sounds distorted on headphones
(sounds decent on 2.1 computer speakers, and these headphones sound fine
on other music). opened in a wav editor and it looks like this:

on one hand, seeing the signal hitting the wall that often, i'd think it
is clipping, but then watching it on a real time oscilloscope, i can't see
any plateau shapes indicative of clipping (such as
http://users2.ev1.net/~wesiddiquis/siddiq/clipscope.jpg). shouldn't it
look more like:

comments? please write off-list

many thanks. i could email the mp3 too, if you'd like. (bonus points if
you recognize any of the three tracks!)
