It's interesting to me when a flash bothers and when it does not. Stage
lights are bright and sometimes steady but sometimes there are all kinds of
strobes and weird stuff. Perhaps it is the unexpected flash that bothers
people. I've been flashed from close range in a dark place and that is
really blinding. As Barry mentioned it does not seem to bother basketball
players. I suspect the same is true with football unless you flashed a pass
receiver in the eyes at night when he was trying to catch a pass. That would
probably have to be at close range to be a problem. When I was doing
gymnastics work I used a blue flood light on the floor and off to the side.
This compensated for the very high lights in the gym but didn't bother the
performers. The teacher was very much against flash. I take ballet pictures
with a flash during practice but from an overhead balcony. The teacher does
not want the flash at floor level. It helps to make a picture of the teacher
once in a while. During performances the flash frequently bothers other
people in the audience. That's probably the highest risk factor to the
photographer. It would be interesting to hear Doro's opinions on this since
she is a performing musician. Are you home yet girl? /jmac

If he's a "rock star" a flash shouldn't bother him. As a lowly side man and
juke joint player, I've always considered flash photography a sign that I'm
doing
something right. Half the time, the stage lights are so bright you can't see
anything anyhow.
