Ali, I used to shoot concerts regularly and would suggest using the
fastest film you can.  Since this is a local event, the lighting is
very unlikely to be very bright and you'll need all the help you can
get!  Of course you'll want to spot meter if you can.

The good news is that security is usually more relaxed at that kind of
venue and you should be able to get close, especially if you identify
yourself to the folks in charge and get their buy in.

I'd also suggest using a tripod if you can or at least a monopod.  I
shot the Police (that sounds odd) years ago using a tripod and got
some very interesting effects.
