I would bet that if you keep the brightness the same and increase the 
magnification then the apparent distance to the image decreases. There is 
probably something about the apparent distance to the screen that becomes a 
problem if it is too short. The tradeoffs made are probably good for the 
population as a whole but some people would probably be better with 
different tradeoffs.

The amount of light hitting the screen would be determined by the lens on 
the camera. If that same amount of light is spread over a wider area, the 
intensity would be less for the same viewing distance. IRRC the apparent 
distance to the OM screen is over 3 feet but the image looks bigger than the 
screen would at 3 feet.
