[OM] The joy of prime lenses

Subject: [OM] The joy of prime lenses

Back from 2 weeks of travel in India... I had taken only prime lenses
this time, and they were a joy to use! Not once did I miss a zoom.

I had taken: 21/3.5, 35/2, 85/2, 135/2.8 + 1.5x Kenko TC and Vivitar
2x macro TC.

I actually used the 35/2 and 85/2 for most of my shots (80% ?), the
21/3.5 and 135/2.8 + 1.5xTC for the rest. Only once did I use the
135/2.8 + 2xTC, so I think next time I will not carry it.

I was rather disappointed by what I got with the 135/2,8 + 1.5xTC
(Kenko): most pictures were not sharp, probably a problem with
focussing or rather a difficulty in handling the lens steady, I don't
know. A few pictures were sharp, though. But I think I have got much
better results with my 180/2.8 in the past - I did not take it this
time because of its weight...

For people shots (markets, temples etc.), the 35/2 and 85/2 were
extraordinary, particularly the 35/2, which has forced me to go
closer, in eye contact with the people I was photographing - a smile,
and nine times out of ten I got a smile back. Some were less happy,
but no one objected to being photographed.

Finally, another advantage of prime lenses was their large aperture:
I took many pictures which I could not have taken with a zoom, using
ISO 100 film (Velvia) in rather dim light conditions.
