Another possibility is the optical characteristics of the zoom
lens itself. It's possible that particular focal length was a
crossover point between optical segments. It's impossible to
build a zoom lens that is perfect at both ends without mucking
up something in the middle.
I'm waiting for a bunch of silver-nosed prime lenses to be
introduced by Olympus for the E-system.
