It must be because on a 4/3 mount, an OM lens is at a different distance
from the "film plane" than it was designed for.

The register on an OM camera is 46.5mm, while the register on a 4/3 camera
is about 38.7mm

How thick is the MA-1 adaptor?

Hmm. I should have read the manual. I was sure that my focussing didn't
match the scale on the lens, but thought it can't be. Now I'm completely
flummoxed as to why this would be.
