Bolivia is about the same for theft. You can't even go in a restaurant and
leave your camera in the car, even if the car is locked. They'll steal your
wiper blades, taillights, mirrors, even your rear window glass, so locking
the vehicle is pretty useless. But I've decided it's better to risk some
things getting stolen than to leave the stuff at home and lose all the
potential pictures I hope to capture.
I need more than one camera to shoot color print, B&W, and slides. All my
film cameras are older, so hopefully not high targets. I suspect the C5050
might be the most attractive target for thieves, so I'll probably not be
taking it to the open markets. Also, it's kind of hard to hide in a pocket
with an adaptor tube attached.

I don't know how people get their film hand-checked. When I ask, they look
at me like I just fell off the turnip truck. My experience has been, it's
through the scanner, or you can walk to the next airport. It will be scanned
3 times in the US, Bangor, Boston, and Miami, and twice in Bolivia, both
ways, so 10 times in all. However, last year I could see no problems with
100 speed slide film and 200 speed fuji color print film.
