Been a list member for many years, but I have been lurking for a long time.
Tom and I always seem to agree on these matters. I agree with everything he
says here, including the "I love my D70" part. It's fabulous, reasonably
priced in a kit with an unbelievable 18-80mm lens, and it is light and easy
to handle as well. When set to Auto, just blaze away and you will be
shocked at the number of great images. When you/she want to get more
sophisticated, the possibility is there.
The mega pixel thing is a totally overblown marketing ploy that has grabbed
all of us by the tender parts. The real deal is, of course, image quality.
The d70 has it to spare. One more thing to consider is the most important
in my estimation that Tom didn't mention, is the selection of available
lenses. I don't know what Canon has right now, but Nikon just came out with
a fabulous 12-24mm designed for their digital cameras ONLY.
My entire complement of lenses is a 10.5mm fisheye, the 12-24mm, the 18-80mm
and their CHEAP but very nice 70-300mm. That is getting me everywhere I
want to go, and with aplomb!
One more thing I like about the Nikon, and I don't know about Canon here,
either, but the flash system with their SB800 is just incredible.

It's my favorite site for information when I am looking for ANYTHING
photographic. Take a lot of his "delivery" or sarcasm with a grain of salt,
he knows what he is doing. It's a fun site.

Bottom line, they're all pretty good. If it was me, I'd stick to Nikon or
Canon, as they have the largest user base and the highest likelihood of a
future (sorry to all the E-1 and E-300 owners here).
As for the Nikon vs. Canon, it comes down to feel and comfort, to me. The
2mp difference is immaterial. I like the feel of the Nikon, but the Canon
is smaller and lighter and might be right for her.
I'd suggest starting with an 'entry level body' (350D, D50) and get their
feet wet. If they really use it, get a better body (20D, D70) and use the
original as a backup.
If I was doing it right now, I'd probably go 20D. That said, I love my D70.
