Darin,
They were designed specifically for camera use and although it's the same 
as the hearing aid cell technology, they have more capacity (will last 
longer than a 675).  That said . . . once the cell is activated its 
life-span begins . . . as with all zinc-air.

There are a number of alternatives, the one I use in an OM-1n, a Rollei 35S 
and a light meter is the MR-9:

It is made of metal . . . should never need replacing (the adapter) unless 
you run over it with an Abrams tank.  It has a diode inside it to step-down 
the voltage (no drain unless there's a load across it; i.e. camera turned 
on), and is based on a "home brew" design that used half of an expended 625 
cell to make the adapater.  Buying it is likely less than the value of your 
time assembling the parts and making one yourself that's as well made as 
these are.  Uses readily available silver-oxide cells that maintain 
constant voltage until the bitter end of their life (do *not* use alkalines 
in them).  I found the silver-oxide cells last quite a long time (provided 
the camera is turned off when not in use).
