Live and learn. I've used the 1-7 with a 1000/11 mirror lens and found
it very good. The whole image is there, relatively bright and clear, and
the microprism focus works. So I assumed it would be fine with shorter
mirror lenses.

I just tried the 1-7 with a Tamron SP 500/8 and Sigma 600/8 mirror
lenses. Vignetting is pretty bad with the 500mm and still there, but
less so, with the 600mm. Usable at 600mm, I would say, but not something
I sould choose to use. So somewhere between 600 and 1000mm, it starts to
be a good shoice for a mirror lens.

So I suppose a 1-8 would be the choice for a 500/8, if one needs a
special screen. I'm perfectly happy with a 2 series screen and if the
light is decent, a 1-1,4 or 13 is fine. The microprisms on the standard
screens black out by f8, so I just use the matte area. But I have a good
focusing eye in spite its less than tender years.
