It's the low volume. If every vacuum cleaner had one, they would be $12.
Lots of separate machining operations, each requiring a fair amount of
set-up time. When that is spread over only a few pieces for each run,
the expert machinist costs mean expensive pieces.
When the E-1 first came out, and Oly was still denying that Om lenses
could be used sucessfully, some list members looked into custom work and
the costs were too high. Jim at Beljan Mfg., who makes some excellent
replacement Oly bits looked at it and said he couldn't afford to meet
the Kindai prices.
