Thanks much for the advice.

I opened up the top cover yesterday and the gooey foam
was there, luckily it hadn't (yet) eaten through the
finish on the prism.  I cleaned it off as best I could
with q-tips and methanol. There may be some residual
goo yet on the wiring but I didn't want to risk
getting methanol and/or goo into the viewfinder.

First I'm going to try a zinc-air 675 cell and check
the meter to see how close it is compared with my
OM-2s. If I find i'm using the camera so much that the
zinc-air batteries are a pain I may retrofit with the
diode.
