First of all, apologies for sending a list command to the list, meant
to send that to olympus-request.

Secondly, and more importantly, I am back in Canada. I'm still set to
"vacation" on the list though so please make sure to send replies
directly to me or I won't see them. BTW, are the list archives down or
moved? I get a 404 not found error when going to them (using
http://lists.tako.de/html/Olympus-OM/).

For those who have forgotten, we do have some older members on the
list ;-), I left in mid-september for a 6 month placement in Lao PDR
(aka Laos) working with the Canadian aid organization CUSO. After my 6
month placement I spent another month in Lao looking for work
opportunities. After that I spent 3 weeks travelling in Vietnam
(north-south) and then 1 week in Cambodia (exclusively in the Siem
Reap/Angkor Wat area).

I got back from all this on May 19. The last month's been pretty
hectic with adjusting to life back in Canada and looking for work.
Amazingly, I managed to get a job offer just 3 weeks after returning
and I started work this week. I'm also taking a colour photo class at
the local art college which is going well.

Now the OM content, as some may remember I spent a long time
deliberating over what kit to take on a trip like this. In the end,
I'm glad I opted for a smaller lightweight kit. I took 2 OM-1n's and a
Stylus Epic. For lenses, it was the 24/2.8 (which I don't think I
ended up using at all), 35/2 and 85/2. I shot almost 40 rolls of film,
primarily while travelling. Almost all of the film was Fuji NPS rated
at 100 but I have some B&W (mainly Tri-X but I think 1 roll of FP-4+
was kicking around too). The 85/2 ended up being my main lens for the
colour and the 35/2 was mostly used for B&W (mainly because I had
colour loaded in the Stylus Epic too). All the gear worked great and
I'm really pleased with the results. At the moment I'm scanner-less
though so I don't have any of the new stuff online at the moment. Now
that I'm employed though a new film scanner is a planned purchase for
the near future. I'll be sure to post to the list when I have material
up.

The only casualty gear-wise was that I did have ocaision to test just
how "splash proof" the Stylus Epic really is and it didn't quite pass
the test. However, it did work up to about 20 frames which I was able
to recover. Since then it had some intermittent problems turning on
for a short time and has since completely died. I'm debating if it's
worthwhile to have it repaired. It's a great little camera but the
cost might be too hgih for what it's worth. I'll try a fresh battery
first just in case it was just that the battery shorted out and
doesn't have charge anymore.

Good to be back,

Andrew "Frugal" Dacey
