A thick semi-solid similar to the lubrication used for wheel bearings on 
  your car.  Actually, the wheel bearing grease is probably a good 
substitute as it does not turn liquid and flow at high temperatures. 
Also works well to lube the helicals on lenses.

The detent ball should only need enough grease to give the ball itself a 
thin coating.

I haven't seen the inside of an Oly shutter speed dial for a long time 
but I would guess that there is a shallow "V" groove machined in and 
connecting all the detent holes.  But look for signs of wear vs. machining.
