Urban legend.

The cause of the accidents originally blamed on cell phones was found to
be static. Most often a result of someone getting back in to, then out
of, the car when fuelling. Mythbusters did a segment on it, complete
with numerous attempts to cause a detonation by cell phone in a highly
combustible air-fuel mixture and with a follow-on discussion with a
fuel-safety expert.

People most likely to cause a fuel-island fire? 20-something young
women, for a number of reasons: 1) They wear a lot of synthetics 2) They
tend to get back into the car while fuelling 3) When exiting the vehicle
they're likely to turn to swing both legs out of the vehicle and then
simply stand, without touching any metal portion of the car body, which
would discharge the static.

Then they walk back and grab the pump handle... The fact that they're
chatting away on the cell at the time is merely incidental.

Even some US state agencies believed the myth and posted fuel-island
warnings regarding cellular telephone use.

You forgot "detonate gas fumes while filling up at the service-less
station".
