The C-97 was the first widely used tanker (there were some ttanker versions 
of the B-50, and both used generally the same wing and powerplants), and did 
indeed refuel jets, such as the B-47.

That required good hand flying and a loss of altitued, not necessarily in 
that order. Refuling in what ammounted to a long dive must have been 
impressive.

The following aircraft was the KC 135, still in service. Although it appears 
identical to the 707, it is actually a different airplane. The KC135 was 
first, and as the airliner project progressed, it was necessary to increase 
the cabin size and cross section.
