The instruction for the 2X-A only mentions the 100/2.8, 135/2.8,
135/3.5, 200/4, 200/5 and 100~200/5 as compatible lenses. "The unit is
designed for use of the 6 lenses mentioned above. If used with other
lenses, their original performances will be reduced. Lenses of 55mm or
shorter cannot be used."

These recommendations are based on the "Olympus standards" which don't
neccesarily need to be yours. Image quality with the 300/4.5 (and other
[super]tele lenses) is still very acceptable imho.

What puzzles me more is why Olympus assigns the 300/4.5 to be
incompatible with the E-1 / MA-1 adapter... What's wrong with this
combination?

: The eSIF indicates the 2xa was not intended for use with the 300.
