Yes, the Brainard Lake area is pretty high.  From the trailhead, it is only 
about 3 miles to the top on one of the taller mountains in the area.  I 
worked once close to this area and got pretty familiar with it.  It was so 
hot last week all over the country that even the mountain towns were 
uncomfortable, so we went higher yet and got a bit of relief.  There were 
children playing in the lake water, which I'd never seen before -- it's 
cold as ice.
