A camera shop/pro lab that I used to work at is located in the
downtown area of the city. What used to be the main street
(retailers, banks, etc.,) was enclosed and turned into a mall.
Several weeks ago I visited the area. The mall is gone as well
as block upon block of buildings. Where there used to be
probably 150 buildings 35 years ago, there is now less than
five. The camera shop is still there, but looking rather
dismal. Is there a plan for the downtown? Nothing but dreams
that could never be fulfilled. It's wierd, really. What used
to be the thriving city center has about nothing left but the
courthouse. The businesses have all moved to other parts of the
area--most of them outside the city limits of the main city.

Is there a point to this?

Not sure, but I'm now living in a community that was really
based around one big employer. This big company (a world famous
name), is on the blocks and no matter what happens, we know that
a good 2,500 jobs will be lost. The city is trying to attract
new businesses (including a racetrack) as fast as it can to
buffer the pain. This is rather refreshing compared to the
above listed city which instead of trying to attract new
business investment, it would invest tax dollars into trying to
resurrect something that died generations ago. (car ferry
across Lake Michigan?).
