If you are going to simply print them as scanned, 8 bit grayscale is 
fine. If you plan to do any adjustments in an editor that can work in 16 
bit, then 16 bit grayscale captures a greater tonal range and/or finer 
tonal detail within the range. The result when turned back into 8 bit as 
jpeg or print after image editor adjustments will be smoother and more 
natural looking.

I seem to recall that getting great B&W prints from the 1270/80 and 
other similar printers requires special inks and/or tricks. I only do 
color on my 1270 so far.
