Any UPS will only protect against threats which come through the power mains.
The EMF which is even more devastating is the electro-magnetic field generated
around the lightning strike. Nothing other than a Farady cage will protect
equipment from it. In my case one of the damaged machines was a commercial
grade UNIX server protected by a large industrial grade UPS. The lightning
hit a tree about 50m away and managed to cause enough damage to permanently
disable the machine. I'm just thankful that the electronics on the hard
drives were undamaged. The E-1 and the CF cards were unaffected as well.
