Hi Earl,

This section of the Grand Union Canal was built in the 18th century and a
huge embankment was built to carry the canal through the heart of the
village. Bottom left, just below where the pic ends there is a narrow tunnel
under the canal which served as the only connection between the two 'halves'
of the village until a bridge was built further along to carry wider
traffic. Similar narrow tunnels known as a 'cattle creeps'  were also built
to connect fields either side of the canal. This is a shot of the bridge:
