[OM] What the heck am I doing wrong with this scanner

I've successfully scanned color negatives and B&W negatives in the past  with 
my Epson 3200.  Now I'm trying to scan some 6X9 negatives and  all I get is a 
purple image of the size of my negative.  A grainy thing  with no image, 
actually.  What might I be doing wrong?  Bill  Barber
