I mainly use manual mode for fill flash, if the ambient is bright, use the 
max flash sync shutter of 1/160s so that you can keep the aperture larger 
and make use of most of the flash power. At dawn when ambient is dark use 
slow and holdable shutter speed and set exposure -1 to for the background. 
Set flash compensation -0.3 to avoid burn out of foreground objects.

For the FL-36 and FL-50, the control can be more accurate. I set the camera 
in manual mode, set exposure for the background, the flash also in manual 
mode, adjust the flash power by looking at the flash cover distance. For 
subject of 10 feet, set the flash power to cover 6-8 feet.

If you have enough memory, use RAW mode, it can save over exposed image up 
to 1.5 stops.
