Make sure it isn't running hot. Look through the driver downloads on the
mfg's web site. I've seen similar problems a few times (once today). An IBM
laptop had a flakey driver. It was fixed once by installing a newer driver.
An earlier time the same laptop screen died. Today a different laptop was
left in the car, got heated up, then had a vertical white line until it was
shut down long enough to cool down.

Jon,
I too think the computer projector would be the best bet if you can
hire one, but bear in mind that unless they are profiled, they are
notorious for projecting pretty inaccurate color-that is, they tend
to be poorly color-managed. If you can find a service bureau that
rents one, for example, they may be able to profile one for the
computer system used to drive the projector.
A profiling spectrophotomer e.g., a Gretag MacBeth EyeOne Photo would
be able to do this.

Just some thoughts regarding CH's and Moose comments.
If you think a 10D is bad for shooting ballet, try a C*non D60! :-);
also to be fair, while the Canon 28-135 is a nice lens, it's
certainly not the fastest piece of glass on the planet.
Seriously, though, the Canon 1.6X series prosumer models are getting
better and better for the applications CH is talking about, like
shooting ballet. The 20D is a marked step up from the previous C*n*n
D-SLRs in this regaard; that is the percentage it would work in this
setting is higher, but not perfect.
Bottom line is if you want this level of AF performance under these
lighting conditions, you need a pro 1-series body and a *fast* lens;
f/3.5 doesn't usually cut it. Sorry, but ya's gets what ya's pays
for. For the work CH is talking about the best set-up is a 1D MkII
and a Can*n 200/1.8 or the 50/1.4. Alas, the 200/1.8 is now
discontinued, but it was truly a superior piece, arguably one of the
finest primes anyone has ever made.

Our university has a projector screen in each course room, so I have a
hard time imagining a university without a proper projector screen at
all :-) Also, it has a rental service for computer projectors that's
free (obviously, only university related requests).
Maybe your friend can rent a laptop and enquire with his sister if such
a service, or other projection infrastructure, exists. Hell, if it's
just JPGs he wants to project, he might as well find anybody with a
laptop and just dump his stuff onto a CD/DVD. If he needs HyperCard (I
guess I'm not up to date on Apple software :-D), an Apple is
unavoidable, of course.
But do tell him to enquire how the university usually handles
presentations on Apple machines. It could be much cheaper than you imagine.

Thanks for doing the math or measurement. I wouldn't have guessed that
it would make that much difference but I just did the calculation myself
and see that you are correct. At infinity, the lens to film plane
distance for a 24mm lens is, of course, 24mm. At 2 meters focusing
distance the lens to film plane distance is 24.29mm.

I ran into the same problem with the last two or three TOPE shots I
submitted using my ATT service. I ended up sending them from my CompuServe
account, which I used for business and which, being joyiously retired, I no
longer use and am cancelling. If I get inspired enough to send in a shot
for TOPE 24, I suppose I can try to do so with my wife's AOL. Like so very
many other things, I don't know much at all about this computer business --
and really don't have much interest in learning.

Well John Hudson and I got together today to discuss things OM.
We had a 100% quorum of Halifax (Halifax, NS, Canada for the
geographically challenged) members and the meeting was held at a pub
so I believe that all international ZA regulations for official
meetings were met.
I had a chance fondle John's 90/2, filling a glaring gap in OM
equipment that I hadn't had the chance to personally handle (now I
just need to own one right?). John was quite impressed with my 21/3.5
and I now know that should I wish to part with it I have a purchaser
lined up. We were also able to compare 85/2's but we didn't test them.
I also took the opportunity to show John some of my prints from Laos,
Vietnam and Cambodia. Given the complete lack of photographic evidence
of my trip on my website I felt it was important to show the pictures
to another list member so that he can vouch for me actually having
undertaken the 8 month trip to SE Asia.
An interest in future meetings was expressed. I believe that we will
endeavour to advertise them on the list should other non-Halifax
resident members wish to attend in a non-voting observer or guest
speaker capacity.

Yes, Andrew and I did have a very enjoyable lunch today at a downtown "brew
pub" in Halifax sitting on the balcony one floor up from street level
watching the trafffic and the girls go by. Atlantic coastal Nova Scotia is
enjoying an early autumn with blue and sunny skies, warm mid day
temperatures and gentle breezes. We are not quite yet at the stage of
needing jackets and sweaters while outside in the daytime. The leaves are
just beginning to change colour. Within a couple of weeks or three the maple
trees will be ablaze with red, yellow, gold and brown and green leaves. With
breaks in the street viewing we broke into OM chatter and had an opportunity
to exchange experiences and to learn what kind of equipment our collections
were lacking. Compared to Andrew's 21/3.5 my 24/2.8 views like a widened up
normal lens! And yes, I can confirm that Andrew's collection of photos
....... all 8 1/2" x 11" black and white and colour prints and all printed
by himself ...... taken during his recent sojourn in Laos, Vietnam and
Cambodia are an impressive tribute to his photographic talents.
If any listees and listerines are planning on visiting Nova Scotia they will
be most welcome to join the local membership and take in some OM shooting
and talking.
