I use an Epson 2450 with Vuescan on a Mac (10.4) and it is a fine
combination. Vuescan is not cryptic if you (horror of horrors!) read
the instructions ;-). I do this every so often and it keeps me on
the right track. But I have never used Silverfast (if that is what
the extra dosh is for). The Epson software is pretty mediocre in my
opinion.

However, if you could afford it, it would be worth getting a film
scanner over a flatbed. I don't think that there has ever been any
disagreement about that on the List.
