I would second the Linux suggestion. I have just installed Gallery on my
Linux box at home and it is accessible via the Internet over my
broadband connection (http://gallery.whizzkid.co.uk). I only got started
with Gallery over the weekend but I am quite impressed. My initial idea
was to make something easy for the family to look at, but I think now
that I will have a separate gallery for my 'portfolio' shots. There are
some ISPs that will provide you with your own Gallery. See
http://gallery.menalto.com/ for full details and a list of some hosts
that provide Gallery.
For a more general website I am currently looking at Drupal
(http://drupal.org/) which is a powerful content management system -
basically an Internet based website builder.
If anyone is interested: I am looking at the possibility of providing
both these applications for individuals to use - on the end of something
better than my broadband connection. Contact me off list if you have any
