The Oly one adds about 3-4mm of depth by flaring forward between the two
sets of threads, so that a mounted filter will clear the front element,
which protrudes over 6mm forward from the front edge of the mount. A
very flat one will result in the filter hitting the lens. If yours has
enough depth, it might work.

Another consideration is what Andrew F pointed out in an old post, that
the 49mm threads must be very narrow

"The gap between the filter mount and the lens front element body is a
very narrow trench which will not accept any step-up ring I've tried.
The 49-72 is thinnner in the thread flange than usual, to fit in there."

If the 49mm threads fit or can be machined to fit, then another, empty filter
ring behind the actual filter
might clear the front element, but then it might vignette. It's just not
as straightforward as it might sound.
