Well, I've been just avoiding this thread, but now I'm stirred up.
SouthWest's practice of unreserved seating is just unciviized. Get there
extra early to get the right to be fairly early in the battle for seats
in the cattle car. Yuck! I'd rather have a crappy seat, know it ahead of
time and have a boarding experience that doesn't decend to the level of
some other aspects of flying. And when I book early, I get good seats I
don't have to fight for. Of course, that could all have changed in the
last several years, as I've successfully avoided SouthWest for quite
some time.

I don't travel all that much these days. When I do, I generally just
pick whichever airline has the best combo of flight, time and routing.
They are all going to have various issues on some flights and I don't
think it is possible to suss it all out beforehand in a way that will
assure missing trouble. Just a lot of wasted effort IMHO.

So an Alaska plane fell down a few months after one trip to Mexico and a
few months before the next one. I took them again, and we didn't fall
down, nor have we since. And they run the only non-stops from SFO to
the places I go. I can usually get a competitive price and avoiding the
customs stop at LAX when returning is worth quite a bit to me.
