In technical terms (ha), your scanner lacks the D-Max poop to deal
with the shadows.  Vuescan offers lots of tools for pulling stuff from
the shadows, and the Microtek/Polaroid scanners really shine in
getting detail from shadows, or at least not returning this kind of
noise.  I will not consider getting another film scanner as long as my
Polaroid still works, but the SS4000 is not current and really
represents an older generation of scanner.  From what I have seen, I'd
probably get a Dimage 5400 before anything else, but not before
exhausting what Vuescan can do with multiple passes, etc.  What Ag
Schnozz has been able to do with my old LS-20 and Vuescan is unreal.
