Somewhere around here I've got several scrapbooks of photos my grandfather
took in France during World War I, at places such as Verdun. They are as
sharp and clear as the day he got them processed. Well, maybe not quite that
sharp and clear, but they look good. On the other hand, I've got some boxes
of color slides I took while serving in Vietnam and Ethiopia, and they have,
well, faded and molded, etc. Some of the black and white I processed in
Vietnam still looks pretty good, though.

For most of what I'm shooting now, truth to tell (and I swear I'll deny this
if anyone rats me out), the real joy is in the process of shooting and
fiddling and printing and selling to tourists. The color prints will last
longer than I'll live, and the people who buy them really like them. I get
thank you notes from people I never met who write to tell me how much they
enjoy their images.

If they don't last forever, I don't care. It just means my descendants won't
have old grandpa's prints to fight over. And the descendants of people who
buy my pictures won't have the pictures to fight over, either. eBay may miss
the money, but I'll be dead, and won't. And who knows if the digital files
will still be useable, of if anyone will even want to try to use them.

Now, if I start getting into people shots, I might feel differently. Scenery
is one thing. Humans are something else entirely. <g>
