I believe focusing is a problem of all Nikon scanners unless your slide is
very flat or in a strap. For most mounted slides I have to make three points
focus check and then select a value in between to make sure I get better
resolution (but in many cases it is still not perfect).

Yes, my LS4000 has flare problem, I had took it to N*kon service center for
three times and they were unable to solve it, finally I was convienced it is
normal after they shown me a new scanner with the same problem. Flare is
most obvious when a large white area meet a large dark area like moon shot,
the dark edge near the moon has a value of 25 (out of 255, I would accept if
it was below 10). I discovered the flare problem when I was doing a scanning
job for Kodakchrome slides, a woman dressing in dark was standing in front
of a white car at outdoor. Her dress looked grey near the white car (no
problem when viewed in light box) I had to spend lots of time to do burning
to make the scanned image look acceptable. Ok, similar problem happen also
with my Epson 4850 but it is a cheap flat bed!

If you don't have these extreme slides it should be ok, the strength of the
N*kon is color accuracy for slide and it is pretty fast.
