Have another cup of coffee Ian.  800x600 is SVGA resolution, is a 
standard size and is precisely 4:3.  I think it's not so common since it 
wasn't on the market very long before it was surpassed by XGA which is 
1024x768.  Also precisely 4:3.

I don't know the answer to your question though about 1280x1024.  The 
aspect ratio is 5:4 rather than 4:3.

This brings up an interesting related question of Oly's choice of 4:3 
aspect ratio because it's the aspect ratio of TV and monitors.  But the 
4:3 choice is made at a time when the 4:3 aspect ratio is rapidly 
starting to disappear with the advent of HDTV and wide screen flat panel 
displays.
