The trip was wonderful. When you've hiked down to the river you take
a certain ownership of the Grand Canyon that doesn't occur on the rim.
The staff at Phantom Ranch make sure of that. Wonderful excursions
during the day, and a good hike out, but for the last mile (packed
snow, which was not a problem in itself, but it was for all the yahoos
on the trail on spring break).

Won't comment on the dumb part. We spent some hours at the confluence
of the Bright Angel Creek and the Colorado photographing the granite
walls across the river and just looking at the squiggly vertical
layers of igneous rock, thinking about the insignificance of our brief
lives in comparison to such splendors, except that who else will sing
its songs?
