If you don't mind heavy, I have been very happy with the Tamron 80-200 f2.8.
(You can review its performance specs on one of the links already posted.) It
is very sharp and has a great MC---I have not seen one shot with flare. Many
list members give it a thumbs-up (thanks) and it has not disappointed. I am
not yet sure whether to attempt to back-pack it however. The tripod mount it
came with is flimsy and is usually long gone, though a Zuiko 135 mount is still
available and can easily be retrofitted to the lens---it works great and is
sturdy. You may need longer and fast for critters and this alone may not fit
the bill. There is a Zuiko 70-210 4.5-5.6 which is quite petite, though I am
not sure I ever liked its long end too much and it may not be fast enough for
you. It is not expensive, however.
I just got a Zuiko F5 50-250 that Jeff likes (thanks Jeff) though can't
personally comment yet. It is certainly smaller than the Tamron-- I think it
weighs about 750 gm, if I remember correctly.
