Interesting point about the static.  The camera in question is certainly 
in New England and I can also attest to getting zapped a _lot_ recently 
as I've been getting out of the car.  However, the 20D doesn't exhibit 
the same problem.  It's been used less than the 5D in the past month but 
has still gotten a fair amount of usage.

I'll keep any eye on the 5D over the next couple of months to see if the 
problem recurs and also note whether the storage conditions for the two 
cameras are any different.  They're kept in different bags but both bags 
have been used for several years for storing digital cameras.
