Perfectly comprehensible story. I appreciate your words about your mum's
condition and the importance of a second or further opinion. In my case, the
condition is well understood, (unfortunately) quite common in my age range
(especially amongst us "myopics"), and not normally requiring any corrective
treatment (unless further complications set in, such as retinal tears or
detachment). I am also privileged to live in a large city with many
specialists, and I took myself directly to the hospital with the best
reputation for eye treatment and surgery. After the usual wait in ER I was
seen by an opthalmologist fairly quickly (by our standards, anyway) - about
three more hours - and he would have performed any necessary surgery right
away if he had found any retinal problems.
