<recently did some damage to my DZ 14-54. The lens was mounted on an
E-1, which was attached to my tripod. The tripod stood about chest
high, and I basically knocked it over. Unfortunately the whole thing
came straight down on the front of the lens. There was no filter in
place, and so the outer ring where the filter attaches took most of
the blow. There is now a slight crack in the plastic that is
immediately behind the filter ring, and of course the ring is bent
slightly, so that it is difficult (but not impossible) to get a filter
on and off.>
I sympathise as many years ago I dropped an OM10 with a brand-new
Vivitar 28-70 Macro and just managed to break the fall by putting my
foot underneath. (The system was loose in a new case and I was used
to the camera being fixed to the strap round my neck).
The camera never gave any trouble and I did not detect any
subsequent problems with the lens but got the lens professionally
checked as a precaution I was surprised and disappointed that two
repairers reported the lens as damaged beyond repair.
Sounds to me as if the advice to discuss with insurers might well be
appropriate for a DZ14-54 even if it still takes decent pictures.
