I can only attest to what I've been able to achieve with the
Nikon V.  When at the very limits of a slide's contrast or
saturation range I'm able to pull out nuances that I cannot even
see with a loupe on a bright light-table.  Granted, I wish it
had a touch more resolution, like the Minolta 5400x, but it
exceeds the normal operating limits of Fujichrome film.

DoF isn't near as bad as the old Coolscan LS-20, but does force
me to keep tabs of the focus point. I've found that the Nikons
tend to focus closer to the top film surface, so offsetting your
focus point to about 1/3 of the way in from the edge seems to be
a good generic compromise setting.
