Why do they have so many variations?

Our recent discussion of monopod heads really brought this home for me
-- Bogen sure has a LOT of model number for tripods, heads, etc.
Does anyone know if a consolidated list of the whole lot is published
anywhere on the Web? Past and present? Of course trying to include
all the variations of some models that have been around for decades
would be a serious pain.
