I usually prefer to use a light ball head with a monopod so I can change the
camera orientation between horizontal and vertical. Monopods  can be used a
lot of ways. Sometimes I will lean mine against a tree and get quite solid

The short distance from the rotation axis to the mounting plate, keeps the
center of gravity close to the pod. A ball head may not do that. Although it
isn't cheap an L-plate keeps the center of gravity on top of the pod.
