Hi Darin,

The coot is fulica atra (I looked it up). It also has a very distinctive red
eye which I was going to emphasise in photoshop but I couldn't find it (the
eye not photoshop), such is the quality drop off with stacked extenders into
the sun :-)

I note that you chose the same route for your shots that I took, namely 
extreme focal length.

Maybe we should both get some camouflage and a tilley hat with twigs in the 
hatband then sit and wait for the birds to come to us. All this serves as a 
reminder as to why I prefer landscapes.
