Very true.  The high points in life need a low point to enhance
the experience enough so you recognize the high point.  Also,
during these times of "suffering" you reevaluate that which is
important to you and "vote the distractions off your island".

You just described 90% of my photo library.  Lots of creative
moments, lousy results.  Even the great Ansel Adam claimed that
he averaged about one photograph a month that met his high
standards.  I have studied the works of several high-profile
photographers and found that the bulk of their "portfolio grade"
images were shot during a very short period of time--sometimes
in the same location, just different compositions. John Shaw,
for example, seems to be very hot/cold.  Even in his books
you'll see a half-dozen pictures taken just in one morning.

Hey, we're human.  You can't hit home-runs every time you're up
to bat.  Also, remember, Wayne, you're being creative and
productive in your daily non-photographic life.
