People in Aus. exhibit terror at the thought of snakes and sharks and
other nastier critters - while the biggest killer of course is the
feral European Honey Bee. Anaphylaxis is an interesting problem.
I suspect many horse deaths are rider error, rather than malice on
the part of the beast. That's like saying that cars kill people, or
guns for that matter. When a wild animal really goes for you, you
know that they really really mean it. My last bite was from one of
our possums - they have significant teeth, rather dog-like. However,
in objecting to being stroked she simply turned, took my fingertip
and squeezed hard with her front teeth - a displeasure warning. I was
quite touched once my vision cleared again - she sees me as family
(idiot child perhaps). Interacting with wildlife is often tricky or
dangerous but well worth the risk for us - perhaps not for them.
