I will second or third this. whilst in the holder waiting its turn to
get scanned it wil pick up dust. It WILL have dust on it. I alsmost went
crazy trying to get dust free scans with no IR channel...
I started of with the Minolta multi scan IV. apart from being not that
sharp, not that saturated and had lots of CCD noise it was the dust that
drove me mad. Little dust lumps that you could not see on the slide with
the unaided eye become very visible on the computer screen. Dust you can
see on the slide is very very anoying on the screen. One of the main
reasons I went for the scan elite 5400 was for the IR channel. It saves
so much work with slides and negs and with some hacking kodachrome
(except for black and white which the Ir cant get through).
I know IR scanners are more expensive but I have learnt through bitter
experience to get the right tools for a job rather than go for a tight
bugget and try to make do. I end up bying the cheap one and then later
buying the next model up - scan elite 5400 and then end up etc. Its a
false econnomy.
If you are in the UK and want to try a scanner I still have my old dual
scan IV if you are interested. It cost me about 250 pounds but it is too
limited in its caperbilities for me or my father. When I got the scan
elite 5400 I gave the IV to my father and he was never satisfied with
it. In fact he started playing around with 6MP point and shoots in
preference to the scans it gave. When I got the coolscan 9000ed I gave
the scan elite 5400 to my father he was amazed at the difference in
quality now he no longer plays with the point and shoot digital. (and he
has not seen any scans from the 9000ed yet which is better than the 5400
for 35mm)
